Monument to Clavé (1875)

Josep Anselm Clavé i Camps (Barcelona, 1824-1874) was musician, poet and social and political leader. He wanted to subtract the workers of the unhappy environment from the taverns where they used to meet and he did because of that some popular choral songs that were sung in the coffees. Like this the first choral society of Catalonia and of the Iberian Peninsula, "The Dawn", appeared in 1845, that it passed to being called “La Fraternitat” (1850) and finally “Euterpe” (1854). The movement stretched on the Catalan countries and were born some eighty-five of "Choirs of Clavé", which were gotten together in mass festivals under the foundational lemma "Progress, Love, Virtue". In the impulse of the Renaixença, Clavé made the first songs in Catalan, the best known of which it is "The flowers of May" (1859). He set up the magazine "El Eco de Euterpe" (1859). As a politician, he militated from youngster in the republicanism and he participated in the attempts at utopian socialism of Narcís Monturiol. In 1845 he was imprisoned in the Ciutadella of Barcelona, in 1856 he was confined in the Baleares, and in 1867 he was imprisoned in Madrid. The triumph of the Glorious Revolution of 1868 converted him into professional politician. He was president of the Regional Government of Barcelona (1873), deputy in the constituent courts and civil governor of Castelló and of Tarragona (1873-1874). He died in Barcelona on the 24th February of 1874. It was decided to make a funereal monument on his grave, in the cemetery of the East. The terrain was paid with popular subscription and at the beginning of 1875 it was summoned a competition for the mausoleum, the prize of which would be the glory from making it. "El Eco de Euterpe" of the 6 May of 1875 relates the participants: the sculptors Manuel Fuxà, Pastor brothers, Francesc Rosell Garriga and Francesc Manyé; the master builders Francesc Esplugas, Maurici Augé and Joan Balet; the cartoonist Ramon Tenas; the architects Lluís Domènech i Monaner and Josep Vilaseca; and the student of architecture Anton Gaudí. The proposal of Domènech i Montaner and Vilaseca was very superior to the other ones, also although it surpassed the budget a lot. The participants Fuxà, Esplugas and Tenas proposed the other ones that they all renounced to their projects in favor of that of Domènech i Montaner and Vilaseca. Like this they made it unanimously; Gaudí, on the other hand, did not have more remedy, since he was student and Domènech and Montaner was a teacher of the School. This gesture of humility and of solidarity of the artists was commended by "La Renaixença", when it published the project. The pantheon was difficult 16.767 real and it was opened on 8 October of 1876. A bomb destroyed it during the Civil War of 1936-1939. Of the project that Gaudí had presented we do not have any trace. Only we know that one of its novel characteristics, since also it happened in that of Domènech i Montaner, was the use of vegetable forms, not to create a symbolism, but as decoration.
