Basement of the episcopal palace (1889)

The basement of the episcopal palace of Astorga was done during the summer and autumn of 1889. As the crypt of the Sagrada Família and like a medieval castle, the crypt of Astorga is surrounded by a moat to give the Gothic windows, open on the walls of natural stone masonry. But here Gaudí was able to do what he was unwilling or unable to do in the crypt of the Sagrada Família to not miss what was already built by his predecessor Del Villar. Thus, in the crypt of Astorga, the columns are all rough and irregular, with no stone carving, each of different shape and size, forming a rare and extremely attractive. There are also the capitals, only a few sketches to the archaic Greek style. They contend a beautiful succession of domes and arches of brick, an incredible game of mechanical structures that could only have designed the imagination and technical capacity of Gaudí. The entire basement is a single stay, a gigantic cave of impressive beauty, heightened by the darkness that invades it.
