From Reus to Barcelona (1868-1874)

The Gaudí i Cornet emigrated from Reus in Barcelona being profitable the university studies of the sons barons, Francesc and Anton, and leaning in their relatives and friends. The first to settle in Barcelona she was Rosa. In September of 1868, coinciding with the Glorious Revolution, they arrived Francesc, who registered himself in first of Medicine; and Anton, who was 16 years old and was registered in the last course of High School. The parents had to make a great economical effort, selling some estates and mortgaging the Mas de la Calderera. Anton admired the general Prim deeply and lived the political ideals of the Democratic Six-Years with juvenile heat: the provisional government of Prim (1868-1870), the democratic monarchy of Amadeus I (1871-1873) and the First Republic (1873-1874). In 1869, Anton decided to study Architecture, for which it was necessary to do some selective subjects in the Faculty of Sciences, before entering the School. On attending the classes of Geometry, it could not concentrate: his attention deviated to meditate on the mechanics of the buildings, managing to discern the forms of equilibrium that later he will rehearse and will carry out. In the summer of 1870, he carried out a project of restoration of the monastery of Poblet with his friends of the school. In that period, he fell with a French girl in love platonically. Course 1871-1872 he stayed in Reus, by lack of economical resources. To the following year, he attempted to enter the School of Architecture, and he found work as a draughtsperson to the orders of Fontserè, who was projecting the market of the Born and the park of the Ciutadella. Anton did not achieve to enter in the School until the 24 October of 1874. For seeds, his brother Francesc had already finished Medicine. And Anton, scrolled by his labor’s ideas, collaborated in a socially utopian project: the Cooperative of Mataró, the first factory property of its workers, which intended to solve the fight between capital and work through their fusion in an only element: the owner worker. Thanks to his condition of student, could make the military service in Barcelona, without going to the front of the Third Carlist War or to the War of Cuba.
